High-speed Internet comes in many forms, such as satellite, fiber
optics, cable and DSL. Although it is completely up to you which type of
Internet to choose, some services may not be available in your area.

depends on what type of Internet you have. A modem connects your home
network to your Internet Service Provider. You can also buy a modem with
a built in wireless router, so you do not have to purchase it
separately. A wireless router turns your Internet connection from the
modem into radio waves, which allows you to access the Internet with no
wires.
Step 3
Find a wireless router if your modem did not come
with one. The routers with the fastest speeds are labeled Wireless G and
Wireless N. Wireless G combines all old technology to create faster
connection speeds. It supports bandwidth up to 54 Mbps. Wireless N is
the newest on the market and is faster than Wireless G. It supports
bandwidth up to 100 Mbps. However, Wireless N equipment costs more than
Wireless G equipment.
Step 4
Check if your laptop or other device is ready to use
wireless Internet. If it is a newer model, you should be ready to go.
If it is an older model, you may have to purchase a network adapter card
or USB adapter to receive Wi-Fi signals. The find out if your computer
is wireless ready, click on the Start button. In the Search field, type
"Device Manager" with no quotes. Click on the Device Manager. Click the
plus symbol on Network Adapters. You will see the words "802" or "Wi-Fi"
if your computer is wireless ready. If you are a Mac user, click on the
Apple icon and locate System Preferences. Locate Network Port
Configurations. If you see the word "AirPort," your Mac is wireless
ready.

Insert your network adapter card or USB adapter if
you had to purchase one. Your computer will automatically detect the
device. Follow the instructions to install the driver.
Step 2

type of Internet you purchased. A cable modem will be hooked up the
same way as cable TV. DSL Internet is hooked up using a phone jack.
Step 3
Connect the modem to your computer to finish setup.
Your computer will automatically recognize the modem. Install the driver
for the modem. Most modems have a built-in driver, and will run as soon
as your computer detects the modem. Some modems do require a CD to be
installed. You can find you CD in the in the box in which you received
your modem.

Set up the router by connecting to the modem with
the Ethernet cables provided. Install the driver on your computer to
complete setup. Most routers come with built-in drivers and will run
automatically. Some routers ship with installation CDs.
