Restore your computer's performance.
Your computer may be performing slower than when you purchased it. Many factors, such as viruses and other software and hardware problems can cause the computer to slow down. Some people who do not know how to troubleshoot computers would prefer to buy a new one instead, but there are actually some tweaks and tricks that can restore the computer's performance.

Instructions

    • 1
Clean your system. Delete unnecessary files and programs from your computer. Set the browser to not save your browsing history if it is not of much importance to you. Refer to the "Help" file of your browser for specific instructions.
    • 2
Download and install Windows updates whenever they become available. Schedule automatic updates on your computer to keep the computer up-to-date. If you are using Windows XP, right click "My Computer", "Properties", "Automatic Updates", tab and then "Automatic (Recommended). Set an update schedule, click "Apply", and "OK". If you have Windows Vista, click "Start", "All Programs", "Windows Updates", "Change Settings", and "Install Updates Automatically". Set a schedule and click "OK". If you have Windows 7 installed, open "Control Panel", "System and Security", Windows Update", "Change Settings", "Install Updates Automatically", and then "OK".

Schedule computer virus scans and updates when you are not using your computer. This will allow the computer to make full use of the computer's resources without interruption. This is also ideal because updates and computer scans slow down the computer's performance on a significant level. Scan the computer for viruses and malware at least once a week.

Upgrade your computer memory. Purchase a compatible memory chip from a local computer store and install it to your unit. See the Resources section for details on how to install a new memory chip. If you are not confident doing this procedure yourself, seek the help of a computer professional.

Keep your registry clean. The "registry" is a directory of the programs installed in your system. When the registry is disorganized, it causes the computer to slow down. Since the registry is complicated and is difficult to clean manually, use a reputable registry cleaner to clean it for you.

Clean your computer's parts. The computer accumulates dust and dirt over time, so you have to clean it. See the Resources section for more detailed instructions on how to clean your computer.
